My Drawings - My Photomanips - FeedbackHub

As you may or may not be aware, I've been going through some severe mood swings last few days. I've spilled some of my thought here in my journal because I needed it out of my head. But I haven't expected such a positive feedback. Many of you messaged me and commented, that was really what I needed then :)

I'm both gracious and surprised of how much kind words you had for me. So I decided I want to share give you something back in return :)

So I announce that Second Edition of Watchers Lottery is now ON!

If you remember the previous edition you know how it works. If you don't, the rules are pretty simple:

:bulletyellow:Anyone who managed to meet there conditions is eligible to win one of the prices. After the time is up I'll give each one of the participants a number (in order of posting) and then randomly pick three persons (using random.org) and they will get the prizes. Easy, isn't it?

Journal Entry: Sat Apr 14, 2012, 8:33 AM
My Drawings - My Photomanips - FeedbackHub

The super-emo journal entry I posted yesterday was an outcome of my rage, sadness and disappointment. And some things need to be cleared out I believe.

My post may have suggested otherwise, but I CAN stand people not liking my art or "art" (or whatever you want to call it, since I'm not sure any more). I was not born yesterday, I realise there are people who will not like what I do, it's more than natural, because every person has his own idea of art and it differs from individual to an individual and there's not a single style that would fit everyone. I get that. I also get that people like to express their dislike form time to time, even if I don't do it personally. If I see a piece of art that does not fit my idea of art I just move on. If I critique, I do so on pieces that I like, the ones I think could benefit from what I said and are also within my area of expertise. But I get that there must be people who view this concept differently. I could not say that does not bother me sometimes but I learned to get over it in most cases. What really cause my disappointment is a way people tend to display their disapproval.

I get that a world is a cruel place. I've been living in here for almost three decades and that's actually one of the first things the life teaches you. But I also believe that it's we who make it what it is. It doesn't hurt to be kind, but some people must decided that being nice and kind is too much for them somehow. And that their sole purpose must be to show that, to pour their discontent on everyone who is currently in sight.

I know it's how internet works. It gives you enough anonymity to be whoever you want to be and act however you want to act without any real consequences. I used to create myself online, I used to pretend someone I not really am. My alter ego was confident, witty, educated person with a quick response to anything. But that's not who I am and as soon as I got familiar with any community the real me started to peek out back from behind the cover I created. And it was embarrassing for me and probably surprising for everyone else. And I gave it up. And it felt nice to be who I really am even if I can't do that in my real life.

Every person who posts art on DA is a part of the community here. our actions and our words decide what this community is. And I totally can't understand why there are people who want it to be a cruel place.

In the comments to my previous post one of my watchers cazcastalla brought up the case of her DD cazcastalla.deviantart.com/art… . I urge you to go and see what this was awarded for and then go and see all the ugly comments people posted there. Just because some people are vile, ugly, jealous creatures that cannot stand someone else being rewarded. And then come back here and tell me I didn't make a point here.

I would also like to thank you all, who messaged me and commented, for your kind words, you're the reasons I'm still here! Thank you!

Musings on human nature, haters and piracy.

Journal Entry: Fri Apr 13, 2012, 6:16 PM
My Drawings - My Photomanips - FeedbackHub

Yesterday I started a forum thread here on DA. It was somewhat random, I must admit, and somewhat pointless. But I started it anyway. It was a thread in Complaints section of the forum and I believe it was rightfully placed here, since it consisted mostly of my rant about the lack of "extract filter" feature in PhotoShop CS5, which I noticed almost immediately after buying the software. It really got on my nerves and I was quite furious for a moment. I wasn't really looking for anything but to vent some of my rage through a few swear words posted at a public forum. And it worked. And the story should end there.

But it didn't. Of course, every time you post on a forum you have to expect people answering to your post. Even if your post didn't contain any question. That's normal and I believe everyone who has internet connection for more than five minutes knows that. And I've been around for a bit more than that. And I thought I was ready for the feedback I was going to get.

But the flood of hate I faced after I checked my inbox few hour later was so unexpected it left me depressed for the end of the day.

Most of the answers were somewhere along the "you should check before you bought" line. I already figured that out, and that was the reason I was angry in the first place: I got caught off guard.

There were some posts suggesting I should have pirated PhotoShop instead of buying it. That's also understandable, even if I don't agree I understand the reasoning to some extent. I'm not wealthy, rather the opposite. I started my own enterprise not so long ago ad I'm still struggling. But as long as I'm earning my living with my own wits and my own hands I like the idea of being paid for your effort. If I like a band I buy their music and go to a concert, if I like a movie I go to the cinema to see it, if I like an author, I buy his books. I guess it's not that different with software. I use it and I like what it offers me so it feels just fair to pay for it, even if I'm not going to benefit from it in any way, is it so hard to understand?

Some answers suggested that PhotoShop is a program for professionals and I'm not one. I'm fine with that statement, I'm not a pro and that cannot be denied, even if I wanted to. Which I don't.

But then there were a few answers that went beyond the cold neutrality people usually display in comments here. Unjustified, unwarranted and overly personal reproaches considering the very essence of me being here, my passion, my way of spending my money and time. I somehow got over the suggestion that I should better start taking better photos than making the crappy ones look decent with PS, mainly because the person seemed to have no idea about what photomanipulation is and what it isn't. The ones questioning my abilities and pointing lack of practise were much harder.

I'm not an overly confident person. Frankly, I'm quite the opposite. I'm also more than awkward in social situations. Sometimes I think I'm nothing more I'm just a sum of my countless complexes and excuses. I don't have many friends because I'm not very good with starting and maintaining relationships, even with my relatives. I try hard to be more sociable, but posting a mere post on facebook is a challenge. I'm pretty sure I will read this journal entry before I post it at least two times and then again immediately after posting, looking for any blunder, typo or other awkwardness I might have committed. And tomorrow I would feel bad about exposing myself just like that. If I ever got the courage to go through some therapy I would probably be diagnosed with some severe social inability. But I would not be, since I would rather die than speak to some stranger about my life and the secrets of the past (and there're too many of those). The language barrier is another issue, it's even harder to interact with people who may not understand you because you're not speaking their language good enough. And I must admit my English is a bit rusty from disuse.

And yet I'm able to be a part in this community. To interact, to comment, to appreciate. Because I feel my sorry attempts at giving life to something creative help to build it as a whole. Every time my picture is added to someone's favs, every time I get a nice comment or constructive critique I feel a bit better, because I realise that there's someone who cares about what I do enough to express it. And it makes me feel a bit less useless for a moment. And makes me want to give back to the community that made me feel better, so I comment back, fave and interact, and so it goes.

And so words like I can't comprehend why someone with such an untalented bag of piss for a "gallery" would go out and buy an overly priced program aimed at professionals do hurt me. Not my confidence, because there isn't any, not really. Not my self-esteem, because deep down inside I'm very aware how worthless this all is. But it undermines the very reason I create, the reason I'm here in the first place.

Oh yes, I'm aware it's just some rude words aimed to troll me. But in every lie there's a bit of truth. And that's enough to make me feel bad.

Oh god, I'm mental, am I not?

I'm so very poor (cheap commisions)

Mon Jun 13, 2011, 12:18 PM

I'm so very poor (cheap commisions!)
I really didn't want to do it, cause I'm not that pro with my art yet, but my financial situation went down a bit last month and now I'm somewhere between "I have no money to pay my rent" and "I think I'm going to starve to death" point. As some of you may know, I'm currently self-employed. And there was that guy who commisioned me a huge, three month of work worth project, accepted my sale invoice (so I have it booked) and then gone missing off the face of the Earth, without payment. Now I have no money but I have like 20k PLN in taxes to pay (and the average monthly wage is around 2k where I live...). And, if that wasn't enough, I have to leave the apartment I live in now by the end of the month. I don't want to sound too desperate, but even the cheapest commision can buy me food for one day and I would greatly appreciate it now.

The good news is that now I'll be offering cheap, cheap mixed media/photomanip and digital drawings/paintings commisions.

Yet another survey.

Mon May 9, 2011, 4:33 AM

Yet another survey...

Found in lolly's journal.

1. Do you snore?
Some people claim I do.

2. Are you a lover or a fighter?
Fighter, mostly.

3. What’s your worst fear?
Heights. Open spaces. Different kinds of animals. Social interactions. I'm easily scared, I could keep on going forever.

4. As a kid, where you a lego maniac?
Who wasn't?

5. What do you think of “reality” tv?
I don't own a TV. But back in times when I had one I didn't watch those either.

6. Do you chew on your straws?
Yep. And pens and pencils too.

7. Were you a cute baby?
Babies are not cute. They are scary. So are children under the age of 4, after that they get more interactive and it's fine.

8. Is the single life for you?
Totally.

9. What colour is your keyboard?
Black.

10. Do your sing in the shower?
Nope. I hate the sound of my voice.

11. Have you ever sky-dived before?
No.

12. Any secret talents?
I hope I do have one.

13. What’s your ideal vacation spot?
Some quiet place with lots of forests and water around?

14. Can you swim?
I'm quite a good swimmer, actually.

16. Have you seen the movie "Donnie Darko”?
Yeah, but I think I didn't get it.

17. Do you care about the ozone?
I do. But we're all gonna die in a nuclear apocalypse so it doesn't matter anyway.

18. How many licks does it take to get to the center of a tootsie pop?
No idea.

19. Can you sing the alphabet backwards?
Say - yes. Sing - no. I can't sing, even if my life depended on it.

20. Have you ever been on an airplane?
Yeah.

21. Are you a single child?
No. But I'm the oldest, so I was a single child for the first few years of my life and I miss it :P

22. Do you prefer electronic or manual pencil sharpeners?
The manual ones are harder to break.

23. What’s your stand on hunting?
I'm ok with it, as long as it's not just killing for the sole purpose of killing.

24. Is marriage in your future?
I don't think so, since I don't really believe in the institution of marriage. But there was a point in my life when I considered a fake one.

25. Do you like your handwriting?
No, it's horrible and totally illegible.

26. What are you allergic to?
A ton of stuff. Pollens, dust, animal fur, alcohol vapours, some kinds of food (peanuts, tomatoes, corn). But not to the point that every contact puts my life at risk, I mostly get a rash or/and a running nose.

27. When was the last time you said 'I love you?'
Few days back. To my mom.

28. Is Tupac still alive?
Why should I care?

29. Do you cry at weddings?
Nope.

30. How do you like your eggs?
Scrambled.

31. Are blondes dumb?
Probably not all of them.

32. Where does the other sock end up?
Narnia?

33. What time is it?
13:26

34. Do you have a nickname?
A few. But they are dumb and mostly made up by me (see my username - so lame, I must've been half asleep and heavily drugged when I came up with it).

35. Is McDonald's disgusting?
Yes, in most of the cases. But then you're really hungry, it's 4.00am and the McDonald's the only affordable food source in your proximity...

36. When was the last time you were in a car?
Few hours ago, I was driving to work.

37. Do you prefer baths or showers?
Showers. I don't like the idea of bathing in your own dirt.

38. Is Santa Claus real?
No?

39. Do you like having you neck kissed?
I hate it.

40. Are you afraid of the dark?
No. I actually prefer staying in darkness to the broad light.

41. What are you addicted to?
Smokes, coffee, internet.

42. Crunchy or creamy peanut butter?
I'm allergic to peanuts, remember?

43. Can you crack your neck?
No.

44. Have you ever ridden in an ambulance?
Yeah, a few times.

45. How many times have you brushed your teeth today?
Once.

46. Is drug-free the way to be?
I believe everything is ok as long as you know your limits. But then, some people don't...

47. Are you a heavy sleeper?
Once I fall asleep there could be a marching band in my room and I'm fine with it. But I find it hard to fall asleep in a noisy enviroment.

48. What colour are your eyes?
Blue.

50. Do you like your life?
Well, I guess I don't but it could have been worse...

51. Who’s better, Stone Cold or The Rock?
Who are those?

Nope.

53. Have you read "Catcher in the Rye"?
Yes.

54. Do you play any instruments?
No.

yes, but only in summer.

58. Do you snort when you laugh?
No.

59. Do you believe in magic?
I'm still waiting for my letter from Hogwarts.

61. You believe in divorce?
More than in marriage.

62. Can you do the moonwalk?
I've never tried it.

63. Do you make a lot of mistakes?
Yeah. Mostly by not making any choice at all and waiting for the life to bring it on.

Not really, it's around the perfect temperature for me, not too hot and not too cold.

A broccoli soup

66. Do you wear nail polish?
No. Too much trouble.

69. Do you shop at American Eagle?
No. WTF is it?

70. Favourite song at the moment?
That's a hard question, since it changes daily and I haven't fired up the player today :D But yesterday's one is "Hometown glory" by Adele.

Sometimes. But there're times when I hate it.

72. Do you like your classes in school?
I'm not is school anymore.

Depends on the dish it's in.

74. Do you like these surveys?
Well, I guess I must have, since I keep on doing them.

Following lolly's, who has followed OpiateTart's lead: if you read this, consider yourself tagged.

Streamline69-stock up and running!

Streamline69-stock up and running!

I'm happy to announce that my stock account, streamline69-stock, is now operating.
I've uploaded quite a bit of photos, mainly of locations and objects. There will not be many model stock there, cause I suck at social relations, making photos of people included.

I'm aware of the fact that my stocks are not allways the best photos - especially in technical terms (I don't even own a camera, all those were taken with the borrowed ones). But I hope they still could be useful for someone.
Here're some examples:

DArama! - update

Tue Apr 12, 2011, 8:43 AM

DArama - update

So i had my first flame war. It was actually pretty fun.

Are game screenshots allowed on DA?
It was a time to stop posting so I went and just reported the whole folder. But as they say, you can't make a cupcake without breaking a few eggs.

My favourite quote:
Because of your complaint, my watchers are going to come directly to you and hate you for what you're doing

EDIT 12.04.2011
The gallery folder has been taken down.
Comments are gone too. For the sake of continuity, here's the transciption. Screen names were edited out.
  • =streamline69
Is that a folder filled with game screenshots?
  • ~xxx
    Yes it is.
  • =streamline69
FAQ #578: What does deviantART consider to be a proper desktop screenshot?
"Unaltered, unedited screenshots of video games in-progress are allowed to be placed into your Scrapbook only."
    This breaks DA copyright policy.
  • ~xxx
Well so far you're the only one to complain. People use my screenshots for their own artworks.
  • ~xxx
Also, if you even BOTHERED to look, I specifically state the following on every last screencap:
The WoW universe is copyrighted by Blizzard Entertainment.
  • =streamline69
That's also agaist the rules. Game screenshots are not valid stocks. Also, stating someone ownership over the pieces does not magically allows you to do anything you wish with it.
Oh, and there's Blizzard Entertainment legal policy (exclusions and undelines are mine):
"Blizzard Entertainment® hereby grants you a personal, non-exclusive, non-transferable and non-assignable license to use and display, for home, noncommercial and personal use only, one copy of any material and/or software that you may download from this site, including (...) images incorporated in or generated by the software (...) You acknowledge and agree that you may not sublicense, assign or otherwise transfer this license. You also agree that you will not alter, disassemble, decompile, reverse engineer or otherwise modify the Downloaded Content."
    source: us.blizzard.com/en-us/company/…
This is an ART site. You come here to upload your ART, not some random game screenshots. If you want to show your friends the game go and upload the screenshots to imageshack, facebook, 4shared, flickr or any of the thousands of sites dedicaded to sharing pictures.
So now I'm going to report pieces in this folder, one by one, since they're breaking the rules.
  • ~xxx
Y'know what? Go for it. You're obviously just doing this to make me unhappy, but I'll tell you now that it won't work. Because of your complaint, my watchers are going to come directly to you and hate you for what you're doing.
Congratulations, you just made an ass of yourself.
  • =streamline69
You realize how childish what you just said is, don't you?
  • ~xxx
You realize how stupid what you're doing is, don't you? There are hundreds, if not THOUSANDS, of people who do this type of thing. Are you going to pick out every single one and report them?
You must have a ton of time on your hands.
  • ~yyy
Wow, do you have nothing better to do 'sept troll this girl? They're screenshots for -Fan art- that no one actually takes credit for (Unless it's our RP characters, then we'll take credit for those, but the rest goes to Blizzard)
They are stock images, even if it's from a game. It's still stock. Would you like to quote what a 'valid' stock is before you start reporting?
  • =streamline69 7 hours ago
Here you go: FAQ #217: What are "Stock and Resources" and can I use them in my submissions?
    Excerpt:
"Only the legal owner of the imagery has the ability to offer the work as a stock resource - if the 'stock' website includes images taken from print or film,(...) then you may rest assured that it is not a valid resources site.
Also be aware that the lack of obvious copyright information does not imply that the imagery is free for use."
As you can see above, Blizzard Enterntainment does not offered these as free stock. Ergo: those are not valid stock photos.
I'm not here to troll anyone, but you're free to think whatever you wish. DeviantArt is a site dedicated for artists. Both proffesional and beginners. And we should set example, because the whole internet image copyright business can be confusing. Offering copyrighted material as a stock resource is luring beginners into thinking that they can use it in their works and that leads to unpleasant suprises somewhere down the road.
  • ~yyy
She's offering it to people who want to do -Fan art- for World of warcraft.
Is that a crime? I don't think posting screenshots for others use and -SAYING- that credit goes to Blizzard is. If your going to go around reporting everyone who has World of warcraft fan art - Or screenshots for fan art use - then your going to be on Deviantart for a Long long time. Because there's thousands of people who have WoW screenshots and that do Fan Art.
  • =streamline69
FAQ #572: What does deviantART consider "Fan Art" to be?
"The type of fan art which is deemed acceptable for submission are those work in which the submitting artist has done 100% of the work. This means that the artist had started with a blank slate and perhaps a reference (a pose, character, location, or other source) and proceeded to draw, paint, or otherwise create every line and place every color with their own hand."
As you can see, using screenshots as a part of the picture is not acceptable here either.
Oh, and that's the best defence, I'm sure: everyone are doing it, so I can do it to, even if it's wrong. Awesome way of thinking!
  • ~yyy
That wasn't a defence. Perhaps you should re-read what I said? I said if your going to go around reporting everyone your going to be on DA for a long time.
Also. If we can't do 'Fan art' Photo-MANIPULATION. Why does Deviantart have a tab selection for it when you upload a picture?
So clearly you -Can- upload Photo manipulation Fan-Art because Deviant-art has a thing for it.
But as you said. 'Think what you want'.
I hate to say this. But 'get a life'? Also. Think 'bout this.
Will you really be on Deviant art in 5 years? Probably not. So it shouldn't bother you. And if it does, send a note to the person instead of *Ahem* Trolling. Their page.

I got about 50 automated messages about deletion from DA staff, and then the user in question took down the rest of it.
One down, god knows how many more left to go :)

I feel like a total bitch. But only a bit.

Corrupted psd file - help plz!

Mon Apr 11, 2011, 10:57 AM

Corrupted psd file - help plz!

A repost from a forum thread, here: forum.deviantart.com/software/…

I'm working in Photoshop CS2 on Windows 7 x64.

I was working on a piece (for a contest that ends tomorrow so it's pretty urgent). I saved the file and closed it but then my computer crashed (with PS still running), forcing me to hard reset him (by hitting the reset button on the station). When OS booted I opened Photoshop (no issues there) and tried to open the saved psd, but all I get is:

Could not complete your request because the file is not compatible with this version of Photoshop

I tried opening it in Imageready but it loaded only a blank page (but the thumbnail is still there, showing actual piece), then ran it through photoshoprecovery (some small app I found on the net) - it seemed to work, but all the layers were empty when I opened the piece. I tried opening the psd in Fireworks CS5 (I've downloaded the demo, since I've read somewhere that it helped in similar case), but all I got was:

Could not open the file. An internal error occured.

The temp file is not there (because it was saved and closed). Is there any way to recover the file? (Please, please, let there be any...)

TL;DR A way to fix a corrupted psd file?

Watchers lottery!

Fri Apr 8, 2011, 3:04 PM

Watchers lottery!
Since I’ve got a DD in the beginning of January, the amount of people who are visiting my profile, leaving comments, watches and faves has grown significantly. I could not thank you enough!

I’m sorry I’ve got no time to reach to each and every one of you and thank you personally, but I’m a busy person, and that would be a full time job. I kept on thinking what could I do instead. And then came the idea. When you hear it you will have to admit it’s pretty brilliant :P

So here’s the time for the first (but hopefully not last) Watchers lottery!

Rules

Those are pretty simple. All people who are watching my account in the time of publication of this announcement are authorized to take part in the lottery. To take part – simply post a comment under this journal entry. The comment must contain the keyword yellow (I know, that’s not the most sophisticated keyword ever…).

After the time is up I’ll randomly pick one person (using random.org, and the winner will get the prizes. Easy, isn’t it?

PRIZES:

  • :bulletyellow: 1 three months subscription or its equivalent in :points:
  • :bulletyellow: 1 free commision :star:
  • :bulletyellow: full month journal feature

DEADLINE:

:bulletyellow: 15th April 2011 23:59 GMT (UCT/Zulu or whatever else it’s called). For global clocks, go to: timeanddate.com

:star:  Commision info

The commision in question could be either a digital drawing/painting or a photomanipulation. The winner can choose between:
  • :bulletyellow: fully coloured digital drawing/painting: characters, landscape/scenery or any other subjects of your liking or
  • :bulletyellow: photomanipulated piece, featuring winner’s personal photo/set of photos or his stock photo of choice (must be a valid stock). The theme of the photomanipulation is up to your choice too.

The commission will be transferred digitally.

Journal Entry: Thu Mar 24, 2011, 9:06 AM

Tagged by kevinleedrum
It's the first time someone actually tagged me, not just me stealing some random quizzes from people's journals:D Still, it took me like two months to find kevinleedrum's post in my inbox :D I have a feeling I've done a quiz like this one before, but I'm not checking, maybe I'll come up with something new.

1. I'm horribly afraid of heights and open spaces - especially the ones with "shifted perspective" (like a a runway during landing or take off or a meadow on a side of a mountain - which, by all the rules in the universe, should be horizontal and it's actually on a slope). I'm instantly getting dizzy and just freeze in place and it takes a lot of self-control to regain composure.

2. I'm also afraid of dogs. But this one is at least partially justified - I was badly bitten by my neighbour's dog when I was 7. Luckily, this does not affect my relationships with other animals (well, excluding spiders and moths, but that's kind of obvious) - I'm cat person and I have two of them at the moment (but there was a point in time, when I had eight, including three adult ones and five kittens)

3. I'm a stuctural engineer but I work as an environmental engineer - and I like this job a lot more.

4. At one point in time I considered becoming a full time, professional artist, but my mother convinced me it was a dumb idea. I was dissapointed back then, but now I'm realy grateful for this advice. (Bonus info: there was a time I considered being a professional writer. I abandoned the idea few months later, without even telling anyone. Still, writing and drawing are my two favourite past times.)

5. I'm /kind of/ ambidexterous - I can do stuff with both my left and right hand. I was born left-handed, but my grandma, considered it a handicap, so she forced me to do everything with right hand. And now I do. But I kept the ability to do stuff with my other hand. Still, my right hand writing is waaay nicer, cleaner and more legible, same goes for my drawings. But I could switch if I wanted to.

6. I'm useless, when it comes to rythmical activities. I suck at everything, from dancing and aerobic to singing and playing musical instrument. It runs in my blood. Not a single person of my (known to me) relatives is a musician or a dancer. My sister once tried ballet and she failed miserably (eight weeks in cast on her leg).

7. As you can probably see at this point, I suck at formulating my thoughts in forein languages. I can read books in english and I understand everything, the same goes for movies, tv series and music. But when it comes to writing or conversations - i just stumble, like there was some kind of lock in my mind. (Curious fact: it goes away when I'm drunk - or at least I think it does).

8. I was 3 when the Chernobyl disaster happened and being forced to take some horribly awful medicine is one of my first, yet very blurry, memories. The other one, a lot more fresh and clear, connected with Poland's history is the nationwide joy, when Lech Wałęsa was elected a president in 1991.

9. I taught myself to read. Ok, it might be an overstatement, but it still looks like that in my head. I was six, and every night my grandma read me a bedtime story. But I've misbehaved and I was given a punishment - no stories for two weeks. I was so used to those stories I couldnt sleep, so I picked a book and tried to decipher it on my own. I already knew the story by heart, it was one of my favourite books, so after a while I had a pretty accurate idea which sign means what, at least in the first sentence. When I couldn't figure particular letter out, I ran to my grandma and asked her. After a few evenings I was able to get past a first page, and then it just went on. Of course it took ages at first and I had a big problem with different fonts and I had to ask again and again, the main problem was to understand why there are miniscules and capital letters (they looked so different!)

10. I own eleven brown, four orange, two purple, eight black and one white T-shirt.

I tag: anyone who wants to do it.
